Whether you’re new to Crowley Wines or have been with us from the beginning, you should know that we’re passionate about Chardonnay. It’s the sister grape to Pinot Noir and while its delicate nature makes it a tough grape to master, we’re happy to grapple with it year after year and turn out lean, bright, Burgundian-style Chardonnay.
This vineyard is located in the McMinnville Coast Range. Soils are classified as Jory and Nekiah. These soils are typically uplifted marine sedimentary loams and silts, with alluvial overlays. As compared to other appellations in the Willamette Valley, these soils are uniquely shallow for winegrowing with low total available moisture. The resulting wines have pronounced leanness and mineral tones.
Our 2014 Chardonnays achieved remarkable balance. From front to back the harmony is impressive as it seems every barrel contributed to a greater whole. Right away the moonbeam color of this wine speaks to its absolute freshness. Our favorite high elevation notes of lemon and lime combine with the lees spice of almost 20 months in barrel. We also gained exceptional purity by using 2 of our oldest barrels, built in 1999…going on 17yrs! The 3rd barrel was a 1 fill which added appealing structure. Even in the relatively hot 2014 vintage we couldn’t be more impressed with this truly buoyant, lively and low alcohol Four Winds Wente Chardonnay.
